And no, it\u2019s not just about looks \u2014 <strong>it\u2019s a serious threat to the health and quality of life of millions of people<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what\u2019s actually happening?<br>There\u2019s an <strong>excessive buildup of body fat that disrupts how the body functions and can lead to dozens of health issues<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Let\u2019s talk reality. In numbers.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\ud83c\udf0d Worldwide:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In <strong>2022, 2.5 billion adults were overweight<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Out of those, <strong>890 million were living with obesity<\/strong>. <br>That means <strong>43% of adults worldwide were overweight and 16% were obese<\/strong>. <br>In other words: <strong>1 in 8 people on Earth is living with obesity<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2021, having a BMI above the optimal range was estimated to be the cause of 3.7 million deaths from non-communicable diseases (NCDs) \u2013 including cardiovascular disease.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These are numbers we simply can\u2019t ignore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\ud83d\udcc8 Trends we simply can\u2019t ignore:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Adult obesity has more than doubled since 1990.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Overweight prevalence in adults increased from 25% (in 1990) to 43% (in 2022).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Obesity among children and teens (ages 5\u201319) jumped fourfold \u2013 from 2% to 8%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\ud83d\udc76 Children and adolescents:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In 2024, 35 million kids under the age of 5 were overweight.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2022, over 390 million kids and teens (ages 5\u201319) were overweight \u2013 and 160 million of them lived with obesity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\ud83d\udcb0 The economic impact:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Global costs of overweight and obesity are projected to reach $3 trillion per year by 2030.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And by 2060, that number could exceed $18 trillion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2696\ufe0f How does underweight compare?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In 2022, around 390 million adults were underweight.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meanwhile, 2.5 billion were overweight \u2013 including 890 million living with obesity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\ud83c\udf0d This isn\u2019t just a problem for a few countries.<\/strong> Obesity is spreading across the globe \u2013 no matter the continent, culture, or economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fff1e6\"><strong>\u203c\ufe0f The double burden of malnutrition:<\/strong><br>Many low- and middle-income countries now face a \u201cdouble burden\u201d \u2013 ongoing issues with undernutrition, alongside a rapid rise in overweight and obesity. Kids with obesity are much more likely to grow into adults with obesity and chronic diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u25fe Mental Health and Self-Esteem<\/strong><br>Obesity isn\u2019t just physical. People with excess weight are more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u25fe Joints, Movement, and Pain<\/strong><br>Our bodies weren\u2019t built to carry too much weight. Knees, hips, and your entire musculoskeletal system take the hit. The result? Pain, inflammation, and reduced mobility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u25fe Malnutrition in Obesity? Yep.<\/strong><br>Many people with obesity are severely lacking in vitamins and minerals. Why? Because they eat a lot \u2013 but not well. Energy-dense, nutrient-poor foods are the recipe for modern-day malnutrition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u25fe Breathing Issues and Sleep Disorders Linked to Obesity<\/strong><br>These conditions are marked by repeated episodes of interrupted breathing during sleep and can lead to serious consequences \u2013 <strong>excessive daytime sleepiness, chronic pulmonary heart disease, polycythemia, arrhythmias, congestive heart failure, and high mortality<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Obesity is <strong>the strongest risk factor for developing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)<\/strong>. The prevalence of OSA among people with <strong>morbid obesity (BMI \u2265 40 kg\/m\u00b2)<\/strong> is as high as <strong>50%<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There\u2019s also <strong>obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS)<\/strong>, one of the most common hypoventilation disorders. That means obesity \u2013 a chronic condition of excess body fat \u2013 also falls under the definition of malnutrition.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fff1e6\">\u27a1\ufe0f <strong>And here\u2019s the kicker:<\/strong><br>Many people with obesity suffer from serious vitamin and mineral deficiencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why? Because they consume a <strong>lot of calories, but from low-quality, nutrient-poor foods \u2013 loaded with fat, sugar, and salt,<\/strong> but lacking the essential nutrients the body actually needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The result? It\u2019s an actual medical term that explains why BMI has its place\u2026 but it\u2019s far from perfect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Overweight<\/strong> = BMI of 25 or more<br><strong>Obesity<\/strong> = BMI of 30 or more<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83c\udfaf It\u2019s most commonly used to classify overweight and obesity in adults. But heads up \u2014 it doesn\u2019t take into account your age, sex, or muscle mass, so it might not be 100% accurate for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul style=\"background-color:#fff1e6\" class=\"wp-block-list has-background\">\n<li><strong>You might have a lot of muscle and still show up as \u201coverweight\u201d on the BMI chart \u2013 even though you\u2019re in top shape<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Or you might have a \u201cnormal\u201d weight but very little muscle and too much fat \u2013 also known as skinny fat, or medically: NWO \u2013 Normal Weight Obesity<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udccc <strong>And NWO is no joke.<\/strong> People with a normal BMI but high body fat can have:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a higher risk of metabolic syndrome,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>insulin resistance,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>low levels of \u201cgood\u201d HDL cholesterol,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a waistline that\u2019s too large,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and the same health risks as someone with obesity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83e\udde0 That\u2019s why you should look beyond the number on the scale. If you really want to understand your body composition, there are more accurate methods:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Waist circumference (high risk = over 94 cm for men, over 80 cm for women),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Skinfold test \u2013 measuring skin folds (yes, it sounds odd, but it works),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>DEXA scan \u2013 the gold standard for measuring fat, muscle, and bone mass (more expensive, but very precise).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>So\u2026 is it useful?<\/strong><br>Yes. BMI isn\u2019t a bad tool \u2014 you just need to know its limits. It\u2019s still a quick and easy metric used in medicine and research around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fff1e6\"><strong>Sometimes, it just takes a little self-awareness:<\/strong><br>\ud83d\udc49 If you work out, have muscle, and eat well \u2014 BMI might not be spot-on.<br>\ud83d\udc49 But if you sit all day, your belly\u2019s pushing your waistband, and the number says \u201cobese\u201d\u2026<br>&#8230; <strong>well, we probably don\u2019t need to run that formula again, do we?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What can BMI actually tell you?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A \u201cnormal weight\u201d doesn\u2019t always mean healthy \u2014 you could still have high fat and zero muscle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cOverweight\u201d or \u201cobese\u201d \u2014 in 99% of cases, yeah\u2026 that result is real.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The exception? Don\u2019t underestimate it.<\/strong><br>When you don\u2019t get enough, your body craves more food, your metabolism slows down, and your sweet tooth goes wild.<br>The bare minimum for adults? That\u2019s when energy imbalance really kicks into gear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>And what about the gut microbiome?<\/strong> Yes, it does play a role&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u274c but not in the way some clickbait headlines might suggest.<\/strong> \u201cJust transplant the microbiome of a skinny person into someone with obesity, and voil\u00e0 \u2014 they\u2019ll lose weight!\u201d. From pregnancy, through childhood, all the way to adulthood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Prevention starts earlier than you think<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>During <strong>pregnancy<\/strong>: Monitor healthy weight gain.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Breastfeeding<\/strong>: Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended for the first 6 months, and ideally continued up to 2 years.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In <strong>childhood<\/strong>: Encourage healthy eating, movement, and good sleep. Limit screen time \u2013 especially if there\u2019s more screen than food on the plate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udccc These basics help build a healthy relationship with food and the body \u2013 long before the first extra pounds show up. Unless you have a diagnosed allergy or intolerance, there\u2019s no reason to eliminate any of them completely.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>400 grams of fruits and veggies per day<\/strong>? That\u2019s the bare minimum.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fish and seafood? Yes, please<\/strong>.
